The IMO and IPhO
…recently took place in Vietnam and Iran, respectively. For those unfamiliar, the International Math and Physics Olympiads are annual competitions held for high school students from well over 90 nations. These students have typically qualified by sitting through a series of exams meant to identify the ‘top’ math or physics talent in a given country. Although problem-solving and contributing to original research are two different things, quite a few notable individuals have passed through these events:
Grigory Margulis [IMO '62, Fields '78]
Vladimir Drinfel’d [IMO '69, Fields '90]
Jean Christophe Yoccoz [IMO '74, Fields '94]
Richard Borchers [IMO '78, Fields '98]
Timothy Gowers [IMO '81, Fields '98]
Laurent Lafforque [IMO '85, Fields '02]
Grigori Perelman [IMO '82, Fields '06]
Terrence Tao [IMO '88, Fields '06]
